Abstract
RangeGuard is a fixed beam radar sensor for measuring the range to the nearest object, primarily designed for Marine Vessel collision avoidance and local positioning application. Two trials are described here to evaluate the performance of the RangeGuard sensor for measuring water height below bridges: firstly at the Severn Bridge and secondly at the Clifton Suspension Bridge. Good range measurements have been logged at both sites with water level heights agreeing with tide data nearby in Avonmouth. With 4.5 range measurements per second and sub-centimetre resolution, the results are also suitable for extracting wave data. The water level has been measured at a height of over 80m with signal levels indicating operation to at least 300m should be feasible.
