Abstract
Recently there has been an increased interest in the number of allision incidents occurring on the US inland waterways. Incidents reported in January 2016 alone have been attributed to barges striking bridges and collisions with other vessels. This has resulted in damage to infrastructure, damage to tow barges, barges breaking away, barges sinking, pollution due to cargo spillage and closure of navigation lanes. To assist navigation in these complex situations, we present RangeGuard, a radar technology that has been adapted from the oil and gas industry and is perfectly suited to aid navigation in the inland waterways. Used alongside traditional navigation techniques, it provides additional situational awareness and an extra level of security, which will enable confident navigation and passage through bridges and locks.
