Jan Grothusen
Managing Director

Jan Grothusen joined the business in 1998 having completed an MA in Computer Science at Cambridge and an MA in Robotics Engineering from Oxford. Jan was key to the development of the CyScan product and personally installed the first units in Brazil and the Gulf of Mexico back in 2001. Jan identified enabling IP from the University of Oxford and led the subsequent design of the RadaScan product. As a Technical Director overseeing engineering and product development, Jan has provided vision and key insight shaping all of Guidance Marine’s product including the most recent release of the unified touch-screen Dashboard for CyScan and RadaScan. Completing an MBA with Distinction in 2011 after five years of part-time study, Jan was appointed Managing Director of Guidance Navigation in 2011, instigating a programme of a market and customer-led change leading to the formation of the current management team. Jan became Group CEO in October 2013 leading the strategic direction of the company, culminating in the sale of the company to Wartsila in October 2017. He continues to oversee the ongoing integration of Guidance Marine and acts as Director for Agile Business Development in the Voyage Solutions business line.

Baljit Soni
Senior Finance Controller

Baljit Soni joined the business in January 2016. Graduated with a First Class Honours degree in Accountancy and Finance at the University of Huddersfield. Baljit has been a Management Accountant since 2012 and during this period, Baljit completed her CIMA qualifications, becoming a qualified Chartered Accountant. During her time at Guidance Marine, Baljit has progressed from a Management Accountant to now the Senior Finance Controller for Guidance Marine’s UK and international offices. Baljit is responsible for leading the finance team while working in close connection with Wartsila’s Finland based finance team. Outside of the office, Baljit likes to cycle in her spare time and enjoy nature walks with an eye for travel.

Russ Miles
Chief Technical Officer

Russ joined GEC in 1987 after graduating from Cambridge University in Maths and Engineering. Together with Malcolm Roberts and John Potter, he founded Guidance Control Systems (GCS) in 1991 and has been with the company ever since. Russ has played a substantial part in the development of the core radar data signal processing technology behind RadaScan and Mini RadaScan and is key to Guidance Marine’s ongoing future technology assessments.

As Chief Technical Officer, Russ is involved in every area of Guidance Marine’s technology, driving the development of industry-leading innovative sensor products focused on the needs of our customers.

Andrew Stead
Head of Sales and Business Development

Andrew has been with Guidance Marine for since 2012. He obtained a BSc BEng degree in Engineering in 1988 at Manchester University. Employed by Campbell Scientific he began his career in the sensors industry as Head of Sales supplying data acquisition systems across Europe, Middle East and Africa. In 2008 he was appointed Managing Director of Muir Matheson supplying MetOcean and Helideck monitoring systems to the oil and gas industry from their base in Aberdeen along with Aviation Met systems to the United Kingdom’s National Air Traffic Management Service (NATS). Upon selling the business in 2012 he joined Guidance Marine as Head of Sales. He is the Head of Sales and Business Development and Portfolio Manager for Navigation, Communication and Sensors.

Martin Schaefer
Head of Business Operations

Martin joined Guidance Navigation in 2008 as Operations Manager. Graduating with a First Class Honours degree in Manufacturing Systems Engineering, Martin spent 10 years with NSK Steering Systems, a high volume electronic steering system manufacturer and 5 years with Gibbs Technologies Ltd, a designer and manufacturer of high-speed amphibious vehicles. During this period Martin successfully completed MBA in Manufacturing Management.

Martin is responsible for leading the operations team, including Customers Services, overseas office development, supply chain & logistics, Operations & Reliability Engineering and Manufacturing. He leads a team of highly skilled experienced people with a passion for customer service and manufacturing excellence and acts as Production Manager for Navigation, Communication and Sensors, too. 
Outside of the office, Martin is a voluntary member of his local Junior Football club, helping with league secretarial duties and occasional dinghy sailor.
