Responders

Microwave sensors for the RadaScan system operate with a variety of intelligent microwave targets called responders. These work in all weathers. Unlike the laser reflectors they are automatically selected by the software on approach as the sensor can recognise their signal as a legitimate target. Where multiple responders are used, they must either be separated by 8 degrees (70m at 500m) or be a different colour (frequency) to enable the sensor to distinguish between responders and calculate heading.

Mounting Options

  • Guidance Marine provide a universal swivel bracket which is suitable for all responder power and installation options.

The only purpose built prism designed for the offshore marine environment

Prisms are glass retro-reflectors that reflect a much higher percentage of the incident light giving the DP sensor (of any manufacturer) a much greater range. The AS Prism has design features to provide prism protection, high target visibility and varied flexible mounting options to allow for wider and easier customer installations.

Prism Benefits

  • Reflect almost all of the light received
  • Provide maximum signal strength
  • Allows for longer operation in deteriorating visibility
  • Typically mounted in clusters to provide a greater angle of visibility and/or to increase the signal response in locations prone to low visibility
  • Use CyScan to 2500m for long range operations beyond the 500m DP zone

Robust Design Features

  • High visibility, easy to identify
  • Robust housing design suitable for handovers
  • Easy 'drop on' rail mounting
  • Suitable for long-term wall or handrail mounting

  • Entry level and lower cost than a prism
  • Rely on having enough randomly scattered reflective material within the 3M tape that some will retro-reflect
  • Used for short range operations (≤500m)
  • Recommended for augmenting prism clusters at installations with complicated layouts and cluttered vessel approaches

Microwave

Guidance Marine recommends fixed installation for all responders regardless of whether it is a short or long term operation.

  • We recommend blue and red responders for vessel based responders that are handed over to the installation.
  • Yellow and green responders for where they are permanently kept on the installation.
Whilst all Guidance Marine microwave responders are common to RadaScan and the RadaScan View system, two different coloured responders working with both sensors will give complete independent redundancy.

The Primary Cell Pack (PCP) has a nominal 24/7 use expected life-time of 12 months under average temperature conditions, therefore the batteries will require replacing. No maintenance is required on the rechargeable responder. For more information click here.

Maintenance and Inspection

Regular maintenance and inspection is essential. Consideration should be given to the following:
  • Targets have not been dislodged or reorientated
  • Targets continue to have good line of sight and remain unobstructed
  • Laser targets are free from salt rimming and UV degradation
  • Responders have power available to them
  • MOU data cards are up to date
